Every year since the inception of the Cadet Academy, cadets would express how much they would miss the Academy experience. Finally, in 1981 the Advanced Academy Class began as a way for cadets to return for a second year. The curriculum was different. It was more hands on and allowed for a small group of thirty-six cadets to become very close to each other and learn what teamwork was all about. The type of curriculum that the Advanced cadets have include crime scene preservation, medical examiners role in law enforcement, firearms training, and building searches. There is role-playing and a practical examination that teaches the cadets how to react under stress and complete a task. Advanced cadets enjoy more openness in their group than the Basics and can express themselves in more creative ways. Many of the friendships formed during the week continue well after graduation.
