A Message from Our President

Chief Donovan

As the President of the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police I envision that we will build on the foundation laid by Past President Chief Wharem. The Training Committee and I will team up with our partners at the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training, Primex, Local Government Center and others, to create and execute a strong training program for our members. This will include training in leadership skills, human resource management skills, and general management skills. This training will help our members to cope with and excel in meeting the ever-changing challenges of being the chief executive officer of their agency. We shall also increase the efforts of our Mentoring Committee to reach out to new chiefs in order to better prepare them for the challenges they will face. By providing the tools our members need, we hope to reduce the number of incidents where careers are cut short due to a lack of knowledge and experience in these areas. This also benefits our communities, as the disruption caused by these incidents can also de-stabilize a community and their police agency.  Keeping the confidence of the residents we serve is very important to our members.  Our primary goal is to provide the best law enforcement services to our residents and by engaging in training efforts with our partners, we can continue to do this.

We have taken a number of steps to increase our accountability within the organization by putting new best practices to work in regards to our budget and finance areas. As you observed at our Summer Conference, the budget process has been improved by creating more detail and greater internal controls. This will help the chiefs moving up through the chairs on the Board of Officers to be able to plan their finances much more accurately, thereby giving you a better overall view of our fiscal situation. It also facilitates our strategic planning efforts. In total, it means that we can be more accurate in planning future needs, more accountable in our operations, and create a good succession system for the up-coming leaders of our organization. We will continue to review and refine these systems during the course of the year.

We have reached out to a number of partners in our state in order to accomplish our goals. We have formed relationships with new partners and sponsors while maintaining a close relationship with the valued sponsors who have been with us over the years. By creating more relationships and maintaining a close network with our long-term sponsors, we will continue, or even increase, the positive things that we do for our communities. These include scholarships, the Cadet Academy, Special Olympics of New Hampshire, and more. When we invest in these efforts individually, by volunteering, and as an organization through financial support, we are providing a valuable service to our public. Personally, I will continue to be an active volunteer in my community, and I hope that our members will join me by engaging in volunteer activities in their communities.

We will have an exciting year as we engage in strategic planning sessions that will review our current practices and help us to improve our organization, and to make our organization stronger and recognized by our communities as the source of competent leaders within our State.
